Learn more about how awardees are selected. For each category, the candidate must:

K-12 Teacher of the Year  

  • Be an active member of AOTP. 

  • Have significant contributions that reflect innovative practice in the teaching of the Portuguese language.

  • Be currently teaching in a US school.
     

Higher Education Professor of the Year  

  • Be an active member of AOTP

  • .Have significant contributions to the teaching of the Portuguese language.

  • Have relevant research in the field of teaching and learning the Portuguese language that can impact other colleagues in their profession.

  • Be currently teaching in a US college or university.

 

Community School Teacher of the Year  

  • Be an active member of AOTP.

  • Have significant contributions that reflect innovative practice in the teaching of the Portuguese Language. 

  • ​​Initiatives should encompass teacher and volunteer training, foster community integration, facilitate cultural exposure, initiate fundraising endeavors, and oversee curriculum design and implementation.

  • Be currently teaching in a US community school.
     

Academic Publication of the Year  

  • The author must be an active member of AOTP.

  • Be an author of an outstanding research article or book published in the US or abroad in 2023/2024  that has the potential to impact the teaching and learning of the Portuguese language. 

 

Leadership Award 

  • The awardee must be an active member of AOTP.

  • Have demonstrated instructional leadership and service in the Portuguese language community by creating opportunities for teachers, students, and the community to learn, teach, and promote the Portuguese language and related cultures.

  • Have developed ties between international business, language education, and international studies (policymakers, public servants, business leaders, and other education advocates).

   

Portuguese Program of the Year 

  • The program must be based in the US.

  • The program must show creativity and innovation, serving as a model for other institutions with great retention levels, community engagement, and alumni success. 

  • Be related to the Portuguese language, related cultures, or community service that impacts the students of the Portuguese language or community by causing positive changes in their lives. 

Prêmio Maria Luisa Ortiz Alvarez em de Português como Língua de Herança

This award honors the memory and legacy of Dr. Maria Luisa Ortiz Alvarez.

  • The awardee must be an active member of AOTP.

  • The recipient should showcase innovative and significant research initiatives aimed at affirming Portuguese as a heritage language, mirroring Dr. Ortiz Alvarez’s trailblazing efforts in the field.

  • The awardee should demonstrate a commitment to fostering inclusivity and exemplary leadership in advocating for the recognition and support of Portuguese language education, echoing the impactful work of Dr. Ortiz Alvarez.
