Kathryn Davis Fellowship for Peace

The Davis Fellows for Peace awards aim to fulfill the intention of the late philanthropist Kathryn Wasserman Davis. As development of intercultural understanding is essential to reducing conflict, the study of languages has become increasingly important. Mrs. Davis challenged us to "bring about a mindset of preparing for peace instead of preparing for war."

The 100 annual fellowships are intended for exceptionally qualified individuals with demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas: international, global, or area studies; international politics and economics; peace and security studies; and/or conflict resolution. Those in other fields, including working professionals, are encouraged to apply if their field of expertise requires them to study one of the languages offered.

As part of the application, a brief essay is required, reflecting past experience and future aspirations to contribute to more peaceful relationships between people, institutions, or communities, and highlighting the role of language in fostering those relationships and in helping to mediate conflict -- and how the applicant envisions doing so. Only applicants demonstrating this outlook will be considered. See below for additional requirements.

Now in its ninth year, the Fellows for Peace awards cover tuition, room, and board for one summer in the Language Schools at any level of study. The award does not cover travel, books, or incidentals. The fellowships are highly competitive, merit-based awards open to all Language School applicants. This fellowship is available to U.S. citizens and international students and professionals.
