The American Organization of Teachers of Portuguese invites its members who are teachers of Portuguese in the USA to offer their students the opportunity to use their creativity and imagination to participate in the AOTP Portuguese National Competition. Students will create a poster or a video dedicated to a theme. The competition will allow the exchange of relevant perspectives and knowledge between students of all ages, all over the country, and will highlight the diverse reasons why people learn Portuguese and the different relationships they have with and through the Portuguese language.

Students from all levels can participate, according to the following categories:

  1. Community Schools: students from 6 to 10 years old (Older students should participate in categories 2 or 3)

  2. Elementary Schools: students from 6 to 10 years old

  3. Middle and High School: students: from 11 to 17 years old

  4. Undergraduate/College students: 18 years old and higher







1. Community or Elementary Schools: poster competition

2. Middle and High Schools, or College: video competition






  • Each video or poster must be the original work of one or two current Portuguese students whose teacher is  a current AOTP member in good standing. 

  • There is a limit of two work submissions per teacher per category (community school/elementary school/middle - high school/College).


Poster Qualification Criteria


For Community and Elementary School students only. The submitted posters will be judged on the following qualifications:

  • Entries must be one-page format, in an electronic file:  JPG or PNG.

  • Pictures of drawings or of collage are acceptable

  • Original content, including pictures

  • Words in the poster can be in Portuguese or English

  • No copyright violations 

  •  Creativity 

  • Accuracy and relevance of content to the theme

  • Presentation quality


Video Qualification Criteria


For Middle School, High School, and College students only. The submitted videos will be judged on the following qualifications: 

  • Video length of 1-3 minutes 

  • Video narration must be in Portuguese (with English subtitles) 

  • School or University name and students' names (maximum 2 students in the same project)  must be written in the first frame of the video

  •  No copyright violations 

  • Original content 

  •  Creativity 

  • Accuracy and relevance of content to the theme

  • Presentation quality

  • Upload your video on YouTube

  • Make it possible for download 

  • All video projects should be marked “unlisted” until the awards have been announced

11:59 pm eST, APRIL 30TH, 2020



How to submit your work


Click here to send your poster (jpeg or png) or unlisted video (through Youtube, Vimeo, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.) along the following information (1) category of the submission, (2) the authors’ names and email(s), (3) Institution, (4) instructor's name and email. 




All winners will receive medals, books, and a cash prize.
